Background information on the general aviation (GA) technology research programs of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), including its Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) concept and plans to further it through a 5-year technology development and demonstration program, is provided in this chapter. As a key part of its SATS concept, NASA envisions small aircraft being flown between small airports in currently lightly used airspace to provide an increasingly larger share of the nations intercity personal and business travel. The approach taken in this study to examine the SATS concept vision and the 5-year program to advance it are then described.
