Two types of motors suitable for electric-powered vehicles, series-wound motors and separately excited dc motors are discussed. A series-wound motor was installed in a bus normally diesel powered, and the reliability of the electrical equipment was demonstrated in numerous test runs. A separately excited dc motor was also tested in a Volkswagon bus normally driven by a gasoline engine, and the electrical equipment fulfilled all goals. Both vehicles were equivalent in terms of driving characteristics and had no trouble keeping up with city traffic. (ERA citation 02:007448)
