The purpose of the Advanced Group Rapid Transit (AGRT) program was to develop an advanced automated guideway transit system capable of providing high passenger volumes, short waiting times, and high levels of passenger service. That system is the development of a transportation system consisting of small, automated vehicles operating on a single lane guideway at short headways with unmanned, off-line stations. The report discusses in detail the design, development, and test of that portion of AGRT control hierarchy responsible for preventing vehicle to vehicle collisions. This safety feature is provided by a moving block collision avoidance system known as the Odometer Data Downlink Collision Avoidance System (ODDCAS). ODDCAS utilizes on-board vehicle odometer data to monitor vehicle speed and position throughout the guideway. The design employs eight and sixteen bit microprocessors and incorporates unique self-exercised software to detect potentially unsafe latent failures within the hardware. Odometer data is downlinked to the wayside by way of a proven inductive communications system.
