The survey was undertaken at 1300 sites representative of all classes of road and of all parts of the country. Short traffic counts were made at each site; the results of these counts were scaled to represent the average traffic flow per day at each site. These flows were then combined in various ways to provide estimates of the vehicle distance travelled on different classes of road. The results were used to assess the amounts of travel in Great Britain in 1966, and to determine the kms of road carrying various amounts of traffic. The results were also compared with those of a similar survey in 1959-60. (Author)
