The flight performance of the OV1-10 gravity-gradient satellite is reported and possible causes for its anomalous attitude behavior are investigated. The flight data indicate that the satellite exhibited large attitude errors characterized by periodic tumbling from its upright to an inverted orientation and by large, rapid, angular excursions in yaw. Two possible causes for the behavior are investigated: damping boom flutter induced by solar heating and an onboard residual magnetic dipole. The flight data indicated that frequently, as the satellite emerged from the earth's shadow, vibrations of the pitch damping boom had commenced. Data from the pitch boom angle sensor and from the onboard magnetometer indicated further that the vibrations were often elliptical rather than planar. A computer simulation of the OV1-10 attitude dynamics under this condition showed that the vibration or flutter was most likely to be the cause of the anomalous behavior. (Author)
