The study develops designs for shoulder rumble strips. Three different kinds of rumble strips are evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing the number of run-off-road accidents. An instrumented test car was driven over various configurations of rumble strips to collect data on sound, vibration, and car handling. This data was analyzed and the best design for general use was selected for the test installations. Trial installations were made at four locations. These locations were selected on the basis of run-off-road accident experience, ample shoulder width, and unchanging design. Accident data for each test installation together with adjacent control sections were analyzed on the basis of a one-year before period versus, a one-year after period. Results were inconclusive.
