The United States has been engaged in multiple combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other theaters since 2001. Over 3 million service members have deployed in support of these operations (Defense Manpower Data Center [DMDC], 2018). Improvements in gear andthe ability to reach injured service members quickly has considerably reduced the number of service members killed in action comparedwith previous conflicts.
