Software development standards for future ESA satellite systems are presented. Trends in the development of high quality software are reviewed. A set of standards suited to ESA onboard software is described. The implementation of a specific automated aid (a modified version of the RELAY assembler), to assist in the development of high quality onboard software is discussed.
