The results of an investigation of the interaction between landing gear and soft soil are presented. The OV-10A aircraft was used to perform sixteen landings and takeoffs on soft unprepared terrain at Blackstone Army Air Base, Virginia. Two fifty channel oscillographs were used to measure time histories of the airplane response. Measurements were also taken of the terrain contour and static and dynamic strengths of the soil. Equations of motion are presented for a mathematical model of the OV-10A landing and taking off from yieldable uneven terrain. This model simulates the soil-tire interactions, landing gear-airplane interactions, and the airplane dynamic response. A system of 20 non-linear, coupled second order differential equations results.
