A specification for the required performance of the NHTSA Side Impact Dummy (SID) thoracic shock absorber was developed. As a preliminary effort a bench test methodology was developed and three shock absorbers were tested at three impact conditions in order to provide baseline data. The specification consists of an envelope of acceptable shock absorber maximum force and displacement response over a range of impact velocities.
