The objective of this multi-disciplinary study was to characterize the causes and consequences of injuries to vehicle occupants admitted to a trauma center as a result of high-speed crashes. Detailed information was obtained on injury diagnoses, operative procedures and complications; in addition, photographs of injuries were taken by a trauma surgeon. Details of pre-hospital care were obtained from interviews with field providers. The study social worker obtained background information on the patient, the family, and any pre-crash 'stressors' which might have played a role in the crash. Financial information on the charges for hospital care and professional fees were also obtained for each case. For patients with head injuries, data were also obtained by a speech pathologist. Finally, for fatalities, autopsy reports were obtained. Timeline narratives for each of the study cases from year 3 are presented in Volume 4.
