Full-scale crash tests with a 5,400-lb (2 450-kg) pickup and an 1,800-lb (8 165-kg) truck were performed on a New Jersey safety shape concrete parapet to confirm that it would meet requirements for performance level two of the 1989 Guide Specifications for Bridge Railings. Performance was acceptable. A structural analysis of the parapet with the specified reinforcing steel indicates it will resist a force of 74 kips (329 kN) from a colliding vehicle.
