The mobility and agility of land combat vehicles provide countermeasure tactics against gun fire control systems. Improvements in the performance of fire control systems engaging maneuvering vehicles can be realized by upgrading the system's ability to accurately estimate the threat's line-of-sight motion and predict future position. A quantitative description of the maneuvering threat motion is needed to evaluate prediction concepts and system performance. Field test to obtain the data base would be too costly because threat maneuvers constitute a large set of possibilities even when constrained by tactical doctrine and vehicle capabilities. In lieu of field test, an analytic approach describing maneuvers is presented in this paper to provide the needed data base for evaluating the performance of fire control system engaging maneuvering targets.
