Because the training development contractor has been involved early in the life cycle of the aircraft, the F-16 project provides an opportunity for instructional developers to provide input to the design of training devices to be developed for the F-16 training system. Some of the capabilities already incorporated in the design of the F-16 Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) such as freeze, performance replays, and automated measurement are highly desirable instructional features. In addition, it is recommended that capabilities be provided by grade sheet production, simulator setup and off-line debriefings, mission status and look-ahead, a self-instructional capability, and a 'help' capability for instructors. Two problems with the physical arrangement of the OFT for training demonstrations were identified. A series of principles were specified for the formatting of instructional displays. A number of recommendations were made regarding the design of the OFT for simulating aircraft malfunctions. Finally, recommendations were made in terms of designing the OFT to accommodate growth and changes over the F-16 training system lifespan. While the involvement of the ISD team in the simulator design process has been helpful in identifying design deficiencies, participation prior to simulator procurement in future projects would result in training devices, which are more closely aligned to the requirements of the training system.
