A short description of the way the project has run and the results achieved is presented. The described project concerns the development of a computerized information system, for use by haulage contractors, firms and drivers, which enables direct communication to and from the lorries and the involved offices, and should eventually lead to fleet management. The system consists of a number of work stations located at the haulage contractor offices. Via these computers communication can be established with the lorry drivers and current information direct from the lorry drivers can be used to build up a survey of the actual situation. Computers with touch-screen keyboards are situated in the lorries. The lorry drivers can choose between standard menues, standard forms of information etc. and can also write texts. Attached to the mobile computer is a GPS antenna which can continuously register the position of the vehicle, and also satellite communication equipment which ensures communication between the mobile unit and the central station. The system can only be used by registering a special card showing personal data. The design and uses of this system are described in further detail, and data showing resulting energy savings enabled by the use of the information system are given. (AB).
