Chile's market for trucks and buses is growing steadily, with many emerging opportunities for U.S. exporters. Although the market is highly competitive, U.S. equipment is well-known and popular here and has excellent potential for high volume sales. 80 percent of internal cargo in Chile is transported by truck. The trucking sector contributes 3.8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Cargo transportation demand has grown fast in the recent years and truck sales in 1992 increased 63.8 percent over 1991. The public transportation sector is a US$250 million a year business in Santiago alone; in all Chile, it reached over US$500 million in 1992.
