The report contains the detailed results of a survey of police patrol in six major U.S. police jurisdictions: the Los Angeles city police, Los Angeles county sheriff's department, Phoenix police, St. Louis metropolitan police, and two municipal police departments who requested that they not be identified. Current, and in some cases, historical information is provided on costs, manpower use and deployment, patrol tactics and operations, deployment methodology, the demand for patrol services, data and computer systems, research projects, and the police view of important problems. The information presented was obtained by both questionnaire and personal visits.
