The Aggregation of Red Cells (ARC) is a middeck payload manifested for flight on STS 51-c. It is sponsored by the Microgravity Science and Applications Division of this office as a cooperative payload with Australia. The objective of the ARC is to test the capability of the ARC apparatus to study in weightlessness some of the various characteristics of blood and their disease dependencies. This is the first of two planned flights of the ARC. It was previously manifested on STS 51-A for a November 1984 flight but was demanifested by OSF due to overall Orbiter weight and center of gravity problems. The OSF then approached the DoD and they graciously made room for the ARC on STS 51-C, thereby saving at least 5 months in schedule slip.
