Rijkswaterstaat commissioned the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research to develop a practical method which transport regions could use to ascertain the current and future lack of traffic safety on roads in their areas. This paper limits itself to a quantitative description of the lack of traffic safety on a current and future main road network, in the transport regions of Utrecht and Arnhem-Nijmegen. The accident data for the transport regions of Utrecht were obtained by using the VOR location network (VLN). Each registered accident was linked up with VLN, resulting in an exact registration of its location by using co-ordinates. For the transport region of Arnhem-Nijmegen, location data were added to each accident by using (1) names of streets and roads, or (2) administrative numbers of roads. One of the conclusions is that the combination of traffic safety maps and the application of indicators of safety appeared to be a practical method for transport regions to ascertain their current and future lack of traffic safety on roads in their region.
