The overall objective of this program was to investigate the economic and technical features for a coal-fueled diesel locomotive system. Commercialization merits of coal-fueled locomotives were examined. Bench scale screening tests and full scale verification tests were conducted to determine the effects of selected coal fuels on fuel specification, handling, injection, ignition/combustion, and engine wear. Technology deficits would be noted for recommended future evaluation. 22 refs., 81 figs., 14 tabs.
