A survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of workers in selected occupations who suffered impact injuries or chemical burns to the eye showed that almost 3 out of 5 were not wearing eye protection at the time of the accident. The typical eye injury was caused by flying particles resulting in relatively minor injuries, such as scratches, to the eye. Most workers were injured while performing their normal job activities at their worksites.
