The HUGO II system, developed, integrated, and tested under Contract F19628-72-C-0294 with the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, is a portable tethered balloon wind data system. Operating at an altitude of 2000 feet above ground level, at ground levels to 6000 feet MSL, the 30,000 cubic foot aerodynamically-shaped balloon supports tether cable-mounted sensor packages, or Aerosondes, at as many as three points along the cable. The Aerosondes collect wind speed, wind direction, and temperature data for transmission, command, to the Ground Station - an integral part of the Balloon Launch Vehicle. The system is self-contained. The Balloon Launch Vehicle (LBV) is equipped for over-the-road transport. It contains all the equipment required to operate the HUGO II balloon. An integral part of the BLV is a unique mooring mast which is hinged for transport. The mooring system consisting of the trailer-supported mast and a weighted dolly, is designed to moor the balloon in winds to 70 knots. Self-sufficiency is enhanced by a self-contained 10-kilowatt power generator and gasoline-powered hydraulic-coupled tether cable winch. (Author)
