The second and third stages of the X-17 vehicles are equipped with a solid propellant TRX-13, held to the rocket bottle with a black Thiokol adhesive. These stages are subject to aerodynamic heating during flight. The time is of a sufficient length to enable the adhesive liner in the bottle to reach temperatures of 300F or higher. Shear values of the Thiokol propellant-liner-steel system were determined between the temperature range of 300 F and 350 F. A critical temperature for low shear values (below 11 PSI) was determined to be 350 F. A regression line was calculated to give the best fit for the experimentally determined points. The propellant auto-ignition temperature was found to be between 350 F and 400 F. (Author)
