Methods of collecting sociological data for analysis private/commercial and motor/oar raft trips of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon are discussed. Final data collection was through a stratified random sample of commercial trips (motor and oar), private trips and self-selected motor-oar combination trips. Information sources included Park Service records of use, trip reports by observers, and questionnaires and interviews from passengers and boatmen. Units of analysis and response rates are discussed. The final sample represented three crucial variables: use level, mode of propulsion, and trip type (private or commercial).
