During the months leading up to the Gulf War in 1991, there was considerable discussion of whether an American attack to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait would satisfy Christian just war criteria. Much less discussion of this question has occurred in recent months during which the United States and its allies have considered an invasion of Iraq. In order to focus attention on this issue, the U.S. Institute of Peace organized a symposium on December 17, 2002 in which four presenters were asked to answer the question, 'Would an invasion of Iraq be a 'just war'.' All four presenters are experts on Christian ethics and international affairs, as well as Christian just war doctrine
