The objectives of the research project were to develop a comprehensive and clearly defined research program to define, measure, and quantify demographic variability in driver performance as it relates to highway design, operations, and safety standards. The Driver Performance Variability Research Plan is comprehensive in scope, including all aspects of human sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and psychomotor response processes, as well as demographic factors, as they relate to design elements in the highway system. The sequence of projects provides a broad quantitative description of meaningful aspects of driver performance variability, its safety consequences, and what can be done to minimize the negative effects of driver variability on safety and traffic operations.
