Recent life change experience was measured and its relationship with future accidents was prospectively tested in men working in and around airplanes aboard an aircraft carrier. Whereas several recent life change events were seen to be significantly correlated with body trauma among aircraft support personnel, only one life change event was significantly correlated with aircraft accidents among the pilots. These results, largely confirmatory of results from a previous retrospective investigation of men involved in traffic accidents, appeared to support a social maladaptation model of accident etiology.
