The inevitable irregularity of work in aircrew is of concern to both civil and military operations, and this handbook is intended for flight medical officers. The relation between alertness and sleep, the nature of sleep in man and his circadian rhythmicity are described, and these factors are discussed in the setting of shiftwork, transmeridian flight and air operations. Disorders of sleep and arousal as they may involve the aeromedical specialist are also covered, and the use of hypnotics discussed. (Author)
