U.S. Naval aviation accidents during the period January 1969 to March 1978 were reviewed to study the nature and severity of injuries to the head and neck. Results, by aircraft models and types, were tabulated and analyzed to determine the number and types of injuries to the skull, face, eyes, neck, and cervical vertebra; this information was then used to determine the primary impact force direction. The role of the helmet in injury causation or prevention was also considered in the final directional determination. (Author)
