This report discusses the land and facilities requirements for the major types of general aviation airports, concepts of environment compatibility, and the economics of airport operation. Facility requirements and standards are specified in order to relate existing and projected general aviation activities to the need for physical facilities. Standards are developed for six categories of general aviation airports. The report describes the type of land uses that are compatible with the airport environment. In addition, several strategies are suggested for achieving suitable development in the vicinity of general aviation airports. The major costs and sources of income for the airport operator are described. Development costs, including the cost of land and the construction of improvements, are presented for each of the six categories. Separate estimates are made for flat and rolling terrain. (Author)
