Intra-ship and intra-class standardization of mechanical and electrical equipments/components is defined. An analysis is presented of the degree of standardization achieved in the DDG-2 class. That class is used as a 'reference ship class' to estimate the standardization that would result if FDL ships were acquired using traditional ship acquisition processes. The degree of standardization estimated achievable using the proposed FDL ship acquisition process is developed, together with some quantification of benefits. Recommendations are offered for obtaining optimum standardization in the FDL ship program.
