The report is a case study for the Indus Basin irrigation system, which analyzes causes of waterlogging and salinity and suggests possible remedies. It begins with an overview of the Indus Basin Model Revised (IBMR); examines the environmental implications of the present situation and that projected for 2000; examines the sources of salinity buildup in groundwater and soils; tests the effectiveness of alternative projects to deal with waterlogging and salinity: drainage, water allocation policies, canal remodeling, and watercourse improvements; and concludes with a recommended package of investments plus associated water management policies.
