The General 70-E trucks have undergone a full year of testing on the BARTD test track at Concord, California. Approximately 15,000 miles of service were accumulated under both manual and automatic train control operation under BARTD Laboratory Car C. Investigations into performance and riding characteristics were conducted by GSI during these operations. Certain truck design alternatives were evaluated and much useful data were accumulated, which is reported herein. The riding qualities were found to be well within accepted comfort limits, under operating conditions of full power on both tangent track and main line curves. Static tests, consisting of measurement of equalization of wheel loads and tilt of car standing on superelevated curves, were conducted with very satisfactory results. Although the General 70-E truck for BARTD is the first of its kind, the test program disclosed no changes to the basic design would be required in a production version. However, the laboratory truck included certain features to increase its versatility in the test program, which would not be required in a production version; consequently the production version would weigh approximately 1,000 pounds less, using same type components.
