Traffic system data normally available at state agency level for portraying the varying time and location characteristics of traffic crashes are reported. Using Michigan's 83 counties as the location units, annual accident counts for the period 1966-1970 for each county were 'normalized' using annual county data on number of registered vehicles, miles of roadway, and a vehicle density measure, i.e., vehicles per mile of roadway. Extensive tables and graphs present these normalized accident experience expressions to show five-year trends for individual counties and to show each county's position relative to averaged state-wide crash experience. Discussion is provided on interpretation and use of these normalized accident characterizations for counter-measure planning and evaluation.
