This document is Volume 4 of the High Altitude Navigation System (HANS) study - System Preliminary Design Description. This volume describes the system studied by IBM to provide autonomous navigation for high altitude spacecraft. This spacecraft system concept consists of a Passive Range Interferometer Sensor (PRAIS) which provides precise angle tracking of and ranging to known radar landmarks, a digital computer to process the sensor data in a 19 state Kalman filter, and an attitude determination system.
