The Polymer Morphology middeck payload is a development of the 3M Company. The first flight of Polymer Morphology is scheduled for flight on STS-34 on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in October 1989. The PM-1 will be 3M's fifth materials processing flight and the first under 3M's ten-year Joint Endeavor Agreement (JEA) with NASA. This JEA was signed in December 1986 but activities have been delayed, in part, by Shuttle downtime. Polymer Morphology is a very ambitious and sophisticated organic materials processing investigation designed to explore the effects of microgravity on polymeric materials as they undergo a transition or change of state such as crystallization, polymerization or phase separation. Using vibrational spectroscopy in conjunction with materials processing, 3M will be able to obtain real-time sample data relating to structure formation in micro- gravity, resu.lting in a unique and significant contribution to polymer science and microgravity research. The enclosed Mission Operation Report (MOR) contains a brief description of the PM-1 flight activity.
