The multiple collision occurred at the Palmetto Bypass, at access ramp providing ingress from Miller Road to northbound lanes in Dade County, Florida, on Wednesday, April 1, 1970, at 2:58 P.M. Vehicles no. 3, no. 1, and no. 2 (in that order) were entering the expressway. Driver of Vehicle no. 3, unable to attain merging speed, stopped, Vehicles no. 1 and no. 2 entered but driver of Vehicle no. 1 stopped in through lane, to allow Vehicle no. 3 access. Driver of Vehicle no. 2 stopped in through lane behind Vehicle no. 1, and both were directly in the path of oncoming Vehicle no. 4, which rear ended Vehicle no. 2, then climbed upon' Vehicle no. 2 (with both no. 4 and no. 2 sideswiping Vehicle no. 3), shoving Vehicle no. 2 into the rear of Vehicle no. 1.
