Three species of birds (starling, mallard duck, and herring gulls, were used to determine if high-intensity laser light could decrease the bird-strike hazard to aircraft. The effects of both continuous and pulsing light of various wavelengths on bird behavior and physiology were determined. The responses of the birds were monitored both visually and electronically. The intensity of laser light striking the bird could be varied by changing the diameter of the laser beam. All species tested showed a group avoidance response. Discussed are the feasibility of using a laser system, the problems of using a laser system, and further research before implementing a laser system for controlling birds. (Author)
