Snowsheds are one of the methods used to protect communication lines from snow avalanches. The snowshed is a roof which is designed to guide the sliding snow across a highway or a railway to protect traffic and prevent deep snow deposits on the roadway. Because snow deposited by an avalanche can be very heavy, snowsheds should be designed like bridges rather than roofs. They are, therefore, an important and expensive part of a road. Modern wide highways require large and costly structures and their location and design should be based on careful studies. (Author)
