The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of using physiological parameters as a source of design criteria for the highway visual communication environment. Source material was reviewed, and a model for relating physiological performance, driver behavior and highway design features was introduced and evaluated on the basis of previous research. It was concluded that the model, because of its measurable parameters, could be used in evaluations of the general roadway environment. The physiological indices considered applicable to the purpose of the report are identified, and the manner in which they might be used is briefly presented. (Author)
