Intelligent Transportation Systems. ITS. A dream in 1992, initiated by a small piece of a far-reaching transportation bill a year earlier. Twenty years later, in 2012, this seed has been nurtured through the enthusiasm of the public and through a partnership of public and private investments into the base for a 21st century marvel: the nationwide Intelligent Transportation System. The National ITS Architecture would provide guidance on how to deploy and integrate interoperable systems that would move roadway transportation into the 21 century. The result has been the proliferation of improved traffic management techniques, advanced information technologies, driver aids, and vehicle safety enchancments.
