Conclusions reached are that the laser link has a greater potential data rate capacity and should be of smaller size, weight and power consumption than the EHF system until solid-state power sources are developed at EHF. Laboratory tests of a high accuracy (on the order of arc secs) pointing and tracking subsystem for laser beams have been carried out, but the more formidable problem of the design and testing of a space-based system remains to be done. An EHF system could be deployed in three to four years, but the laser system seems to be somewhat further removed in time from consideration as a reliable system. (Author)
