An executive summary of the needs of on-board automation and a generic approach for the design and exploitation of more autonomous spacecraft is presented. Autonomy requirements were established through analysis of mission scenarios for Earth observation from a Sun synchronous orbit; a large automatic platform in low Earth orbit; a telecommunication mission in geostationary orbit; and a deep space scientific mission.
