The Surveyor G spacecraft is scheduled to be launched from the Eastern Test Range during the period from January 7 through January 12, 1968. This is the seventh and final mission of the Surveyor program, which was initiated to perfect the technology of soft landing on the moon and to provide basic scientific and engineering data in support of Apollo. Surveyor G will extend the evaluation of the lunar surface begun with the landing of Surveyor I on June 2, 1966, and continued with the successful landings of Surveyor Ill on April 19, 1966, Surveyor V on September 10, 1967, and Surveyor VI on November 9, 1967. Since the Apollo requirements for site certification have been satisfied by Surveyors I, III, V and VI, Mission G will be targeted to an area of high scientific interest. The Tycho ejecta blanket was selected by the Surveyor/Orbiter Utilization Committee because Tycho is one of the newest craters and its ejecta should be less contaminated by ballistic diffusion from other parts of the moon. Furthermore, Tycho is located in a highland area well removed from the Mare regions which have been the subject of previous Surveyor investigations.
