The manoeuvrability of a ship is determined by the physical properties of the ship in its environment and the physiological and psychological properties of its navigator.

Hence, the study of manoeuvrability should emphasize the interactional aspect of the subject matter. Topics like human perception and information processing, adaptation, and training are discussed briefly.

It is proposed that research and adequate training in this field are only possible if the situation for the man on the bridge is simulated as realistically as possible.

The N.S.M.B. manoeuvring simulator is an attempt to fulfil this requirement.
