A combined CCTV and Automatic Incident Detection (AID) system was installed for the Yorkshire Link Design Build Finance and Operate (DBFO) motorway scheme. Using video image processing to detect slow moving and stopped vehicles, the system provides an early warning of potentially hazardous traffic conditions. Design criteria such as camera placement, user interface and the impact on normal use of the CCTV system are discussed. (6 pages)
