This paper examines the measurement philosophy, process and aspirations for the manufacture of wings by British Aerospace Airbus for the Airbus Industrie A340-500/600 ultra long-range passenger airliner. The key message throughout this paper is that product measurement for the manufacture of the Airbus A340-500/600 wing is the primary driver to enable business improvement and to increase shareholder value. Although aerospace design and manufacture represents the cutting edge of technologies, processes and product; the rationale and methodologies highlighted in this paper can equally be applied to any other manufacturing industry. The paper discusses root end volume measurement and aerodynamic form measurement of the wing. The measurement is carried out by using a Leica LTD500 laser tracker. (5 pages)
