A practical, widely tunable (4 to 4.6 /spl mu/m), mid-IR DFG source using a pulsed Ti/sup 3+/:sapphire laser, a cw diode laser, and a bulk periodically poled QPM-LiNbO/sub 3/ is developed. An application of a cw diode laser pumped tunable Cr/sup 3+/:LiSrAlF/sub 2/ laser instead of the Ti/sup 3+/:sapphire laser is aimed to improve the compactness of the system. Such a compact tunable mid-IR source operating near room temperatures can be used practically in a broad range of spectroscopic and gas sensing applications.
