In this paper the inversion of systems is used as a methodology to tackle the problem of fault diagnosis. A transfer function approach with a procedure to obtain the residual equations is presented. A state space approach is also presented; in this case the classic Silverman's algorithm is adapted to invert the system with respect to the faults. Two cases are presented to illustrate both methods.
