We generated 5-ps optical pulses directly from a gain-switched semiconductor laser at 1550-nm wavelength. By amplifying these optical pulses to 1-kW peak-power without serious nonlinear distortions, we successfully demonstrated high efficiency SHG and supercontinuum generation at a wavelength region of less than 1-μm.
